Uttar Pradesh is the most populous state in India. It has a total area of 243,000 square kilometers. Uttar Pradesh shares its borders with the states of Bihar to the north-east, Jharkhand to the northeast, Chhattisgarh to the east and Madhya Pradesh to the west and Haryana to the northwest. It is situated near the confluence of three major rivers, the Ganges, Yamuna and the legendary Saraswati river. Allahabad is famous for its monumental structures like the Akshardham temple, Bara Imambara which was built in 1784 by Nawab Asaf-Ud-Daulah, magnificent Eighty Feet high Lord Akhanda Shiva Temple and world renowned Kumbh Mela. The second largest city in Uttar Pradesh is Lucknow which has an interesting history. It was laid down by Nawab Asaf-ud-daula to mark his victory over General John Goddard of Bengal. The city has many monuments, including the Bara Imambara, The Chhota Imambara, the Rumi Darwaza, the Tomb of Safdarjung, the Gomti River and much more. The city is also famous for its cuisine which has spread throughout India. Ayodhya is another famous city in Uttar Pradesh. It was once known as Saket Nagari. This name was derived from King Sagar who was said to have performed a yagya here along with his 63000 wives. There is a temple here which is known as the Ram Janma Bhoomi and many believe it to be his birthplace. This place has been considered holy by the Hindus for centuries and also by the Sikhs and Jains of Uttar Pradesh. Banda is a town in Uttar Pradesh that was founded in 1612 AD by Prithvi Raj Chauhan, a Chauhan Rajput ruler of Delhi Sultanate. Banda is famous for its association with the Parsee Shahs and also with the Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb who was born here.
